How to Change Photo Booth Templates with Glitter Effect to a Dark Background

Glitter effects add a stylish and eye-catching element to photo booth templates, but changing the background to a darker color can often make the sparkle disappear. If you’ve ever tried using a Hue/Saturation adjustment and found that your glitter effect fades, this tutorial is for you.

In this guide, we’ll show you a quick and effective way to change your background color while keeping the glitter effect intact. This method works perfectly for templates with glitter textures that need to be adapted to a different color scheme.

Step 1: Open Your Template and Locate the Background #

Start by opening your photo booth template in Photoshop. Identify the glitter background layer, typically the very bottom layer. To make editing easier, hide any unnecessary layers that aren’t part of the background.

Step 2: Add a New Dark Background Layer #

  1. Create a new layer by selecting Layer > New > Layer.

  2. Use the Paint Bucket Tool to fill this layer with your desired dark color (e.g., navy).

  3. Drag this layer below the glitter background layer.

At this point, your template should show a solid dark color under the glitter layer, but the sparkle effect might not be visible yet.

Step 3: Adjust Hue and Saturation for Color Control #

To control how the glitter interacts with the new background:

  1. Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer above the new dark background.

  2. Reduce Saturation slightly to fine-tune the color intensity.

  3. Adjust the Hue slider to make subtle changes if needed.

This ensures that your background color blends well while still allowing the glitter to shine through.

Step 4: Restore the Glitter Effect with Blending Modes #

The most important step is blending the glitter layer properly:

  1. Select the glitter background layer.

  2. Change its Blending Mode to Hard Light (found in the Layers panel).

  3. Adjust the Opacity if the effect is too strong or too weak.

This setting allows the glitter to reflect the dark background while maintaining its sparkle. If necessary, experiment with Overlay or Soft Light modes to see which gives the best result.

Step 5: Final Adjustments #

  • Tweak the opacity of the glitter layer for better contrast.
  • Save your template once you’re satisfied with the results.

Why This Works #

  • Using blending modes instead of just adjusting the Hue/Saturation layer keeps the texture and shine of the glitter intact. This technique allows you to customize photo booth templates to match different event themes without losing the original design elements.
